Goals & Objectives

This is a mandatory two-session workshop for 1st year medical students covering the following topics:

  • Introduction to library services and resources
  • Exploring specialized medical literature
  • Performing Pubmed searches (at basic and advanced levels)
  • Finding your learning issues
  • Analyzing cases and developing search strategies

At the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify the various services and resources available at the library
  • Identify the different kinds of medical sources available
  • Use Pubmed effectively in finding information
  • Develop a search strategy
  • Select appropriate sources relevant to your learning issues
  • Analyze cases using the PICO framework
  • Manage search results
  • Correctly cite sources

Case Study: Mrs. Hernandez, a 45 year old Spanish speaking woman, is admitted to the medical center for uncontrolled  diabetes and hypertension. She is hyperglycemic and will start on insulin injections before leaving the hospital. Prescribed medications include: Lisinopril and Metformin. She also takes fenugreek.
